Some notes of a friend of mine keep me awake so badly.
And I realize that I need to push much harder!!!
I have just made my final decision towards my graduate study in the US.
I will go to the University of California, Santa Barbara to pursue the PhD Degree in Computer Science. My research is Data Mining, particularly Graph Mining, Social and Information Network Analysis. For more detail, in this field of research, its program stands second in the world (to UIUC)!
I have had a really hard time deciding between UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine since their programs are basically the identical, in terms of reputation, rigorousness and the well-known of professors. In fact, UCI stands a little bit higher in reputation. However, my heart fells for UCSB. I feel that the students in UCSB feel prouder of their university, the research has the collaborative nature, which I will have many opportunities to conduct research with lots of people in other group, or even other universities. This will give me more chance to learn from other qualified graduate students, broaden my vision from other fields and sharpen my research background. Moreover, the professor at UCSB is awesome - very helpful and really wants his students to success! Besides, the social life, living environment at UCSB is also better. The weather is cool all year round, ranges from 2* - 26* degree celcius. It locates by the beach. It’s like living in paradise!
After long consideration and couldn’t reach at a decision, I choose my last deciding factor - the university that I don’t go makes me regret the most. And it’s UCSB!

This is my year of expansion. In the next couple of months, I will expand all things possible and to get the best preparation before going to the US.
PS: I have lost another 1kg, which in total adds up to 5kgs weight-loss since Feb 2013. The goal of a healthy shape comes closer!

Dạo gần đây phần lớn công việc của mình là email, contact, hẹn lịch, ôn luyện và phỏng vấn với các giáo sư. Tổng kết chút xíu về những trường đã phỏng vấn:
- University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB): Trường đầu tiên mình phỏng vấn, chưa có kinh nghiệm và chưa ôn kỹ lại background nên trả lời cũng chẳng đâu vào đâu. Mình lọt vào shortlist 10 người nhưng do interview không tốt, lúc hỏi lại professor thì được biết là mình đang ở second list, một dạng của wait list.
@21/03/2013: Admission accepted with 5 years funding $237,500
Trường này favor nhất vì quá đẹp, professor ngon, engineering mạnh. Chật vật mãi mới vào được trường này. Super happy.
- University of Notre Dame: Trường này người hẹn lịch phỏng vấn là giáo sư mà mình thích. Nói chung hỏi giống phỏng vấn VEF, những nghiên cứu đã làm, định hướng tương lai, teaching experience. Trường này thuộc dạng very safe school. Lúc cuối prof nói là you are very likely to be admitted. Cũng không ngạc nhiên lắm. Thực tế như thế nào thì còn đang đợi nữa.
- Pennsylvania State University: Thầy phỏng vấn của mình có vẻ khá thích những project mà mình đã làm. Phỏng vấn xoay quanh một ít về những dự án trước mình đã làm, và một số định hướng tương lai. Còn lại nói về application của mình, do mình nộp vào không đúng applicant pool của giáo sư nên giáo sư đưa ra hướng giải quyết vấn đề. Mình được unofficial offer của thầy ngay trong phỏng vấn.
@25/02/2013: Official admission with funding.
- Boston University: Phỏng vấn dưới dạng adcom, và cô phỏng vấn là professor of interest. Nói chung cũng research, một vài background challenge (may mà mấy ngày nay ngồi ôn luyện lại chứ không thì cũng không nhớ nổi), programming languages. Cũng chưa biết được gì qua cuộc phỏng vấn này, nhưng nhìn chung thì khá tốt.
- Texas A&M University: Coi bộ email mình vào spam folder, vì thầy email nhưng lúc mình response thì không bao h thấy hồi âm.
@13/02/2013: Đúng là mail vào spam folder của thầy thật. Mình gửi từ hòm mail khác của mình, thông báo với thầy là mail có thể bị filter. Sau đó vài phút, thầy mail lại là đúng có tình trạng đó xảy ra thật. Sau đó thầy add Skype và phỏng vấn trực tiếp. Cuộc phỏng vấn này không nói về technical background mà liên quan nhiều đến dự định. Tin vui là thầy thông báo sẽ fight cho application của mình trong vòng discussion của admission committee, và thầy dặn có gì mới với các trường khác thì thông báo. Mình coi đây là một unofficial admission, và funding thì khá generous.
- University of Illinois at Chicago (@14/02/2013): Gửi mail cho một prof ở UIC (#2), prof báo lại là glad to admit, và hứa sẽ viết thêm một recommendation cho grad admission. Mọi thứ khác sẽ bàn bạc sau khi được admitted. Mình gửi mail hỏi grad admission committee thì được thông báo là đã có kết quả và đang mail về.
- University of Wisconsin-Madison (@19/02/2013): Admission email từ CS department. Nhưng không có fund. :(
- Indiana University - Bloomington: (@28/02/2013)Official admission with 4 years of guaranteed funding at $170.000, $2000 travel, $1000 technology support.
- University of California, Irvine: (@28/02/2013) Professor informed me of an upcoming official offer with funding from department.
(@16/03/2013) UCI cho 4 years funding, và không ký kết với VEF. Nice.
- Rutgers University: (@04/04/2013): Offer notified by a Vietnamese professor!
